SIKKIM A BACKGROUND

Mission Statement
Sikkim has a small size of just approximately 7000sq. Kms, but this is amply compensated by formidable physical features- high mountains, deep valleys and rivers that criss - cross its rugged topography. With altitudes ranging from almost sea level to the highest in the world, the climate is also equally varied - from the sultry tropical to the dry artic. Kanchendzonga the third highest mountain in the world majestically towers over all the mountains in its vicinity like a god surrounded by smaller deities. The pristine and unspoilt natural beauty includes alpine landscapes and thick luxuriant tropical forests, rivers in torrents and peaceful lakes. The flora and fauna is also equally diverse and kaleidoscopic from Orchids to Rhododendrons and from the Red panda to the Snow Leopard.

Sikkim shares its international borders of 350 km with three countries: Tibet, Bhutan and Nepal. It shares its southern border with West Bengal. It is strategically located at the Gateway of North East India

The State consists of four districts- North District with district headquarter at Mangan, South District with the District headquarter at Namchi, West District with the headquarter at Gyalshing and East District with headquarter at Gangtok which also is the capital of the State.

The predominant communities are Lepchas, Bhutias and the Nepalis. In urban areas many plainsmen Marwaris, Biharis, Bengalis, Oriyas, South Indians, Punjabis have also settled and they mostly engaged in business and Government service.
